Making Christmas Ornaments with a Cricut: Personalized Vinyl Disk Ornaments

Last year I made personalized Christmas ornaments using my Cricut Maker 3 and gave them to coworkers and friends. They turned out so beautiful and were such a hit that I plan to make even more this year. These ornaments are a fun project that can be as simple or creative as you want them to be.

Using vinyl on clear or frosted round disk ornaments allows you to customize each one with names, quotes, dates, or even little holiday graphics. They make thoughtful gifts and are also perfect for decorating your own tree with a handmade touch.

🧰 Supplies You May Need

Here is a list of what I used to make my vinyl ornaments

  • Cricut Maker 3

  • Clear plastic or glass round disk ornaments

  • Permanent adhesive vinyl (such as Cricut Premium Vinyl or Oracle 651)

  • Transfer tape

  • Weeding tools

  • Scraper or credit card

  • Ribbon or twine for hanging

  • Optional: faux snow, glitter, or mini decorations for inside the ornaments

πŸ‘‰ Thinking about getting your own Cricut? The latest version is the Cricut Maker 4 (affiliate link). It’s fast, powerful, and works with Smart Materials.

✂️ Steps to Make Vinyl Disk Ornaments

  1. Clean the outside of each ornament with rubbing alcohol so the vinyl sticks well

  2. In Cricut Design Space, design your ornament graphic or text

  3. Cut the design from permanent vinyl using your Cricut

  4. Weed the excess vinyl away using a weeding tool

  5. Use transfer tape to lift your design off the backing

  6. Carefully apply the design to the flat surface of the ornament

  7. Use a scraper to press it down and remove any air bubbles

  8. Slowly peel away the transfer tape

  9. Tie a ribbon to the top of the ornament

  10. Add any extra decorations like glitter or snow inside if you want

🎁 Ideas for What to Put on Your Ornaments

  • First names or family names

  • “Our First Christmas” for new couples or babies

  • Holiday quotes like “Joy to the World” or “Let it Snow”

  • Pet names and paw prints

  • Company name or year for coworkers

  • A small design like a snowflake or Christmas tree

🎨 Tips and Tricks

  • Use a ruler to measure your ornament so your design fits just right

  • Keep designs simple so they are easy to weed and transfer

  • For curved ornaments, cut smaller pieces or use curved text to fit better

  • Choose high contrast colors like white or gold vinyl on clear ornaments

  • Try reverse weeding if your letters are very tiny

  • Let your vinyl sit for a day before wrapping or gifting so it fully adheres

πŸ“ Simple Wrap-Up

Cricut vinyl ornaments are a wonderful handmade gift idea and a fun way to get into the holiday spirit. I had so much fun making these for friends and coworkers last year. Everyone appreciated the personal touch and thought they were store bought. This is a great project whether you are a beginner or experienced Cricut user.
